Nine-year-old girl may be scarred for life after bottle attack in street

The unprovoked attack happened as the girl was walking home from shops in Govan, Glasgow.

A nine-year-old girl has been left seriously scarred after a man hit her with a bottle as she walked home from her local supermarket.

Strathclyde Police said the daylight attack happened at about 6pm on Saturday on Craigton Road, in the Govan area of Glasgow.

The girl was taken to Yorkhill Hospital where she was given stitches for a gash to the head before being discharged. It is feared she may be left permanently scarred.

A police spokeswoman said the girl had been seriously wounded and would need further hospital treatment.

The man approached her from behind as she walked home from the Asda supermarket in what police said was an unprovoked attack.

After hitting the girl he ran off towards the Drumoyne housing estate.

He is described as wearing a grey tracksuit and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Detective Inspector Scott McMillan, of Helen Street CID, said: "This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent young girl who was simply making her way home from the local shop.

"We are continuing extensive inquiries and would like to reassure the local community we are doing all we can to identify the person responsible."
